Airport Safety With Children

One of the most challenging parts of any trip with small children is the airport.  Between the armed guards and security checkpoints, children can become frightened very easily.  There are many ways for you to ease your children’s anxiety and make the airport a fun part of the journey.  Ultimately the more excited they are to get to the airport, the safer the trip will be.

First, arrive at the airport as soon as you possibly can.  If you rush to the airport important things are often left behind.  It used to be that you could leave a driver’s license at home and still get through airport security.  But these days it could mean that you don’t even get into airport, let alone on the plane.  Nothing would be worse than leaving one person’s documents at home and end up missing your plane.  Additionally if only one parent is taking the children out of the country, it might be a good idea to have a letter of permission from the other parent.  Just something that says you are allowed to take the children out of the country.  Most likely you won’t need it, but it could prove invaluable if you do.

With kids one thing that you can be sure of is last-minute trips to the bathroom.  Know exactly where the closest restrooms to your gate are.  Call the airport ahead of time to make sure there will be restrooms conveniently located to your departure gate.  This will allow you to keep a closer eye on all the children in their trips to the bathroom.  The very last thing you want is one child going to the bathroom and becoming lost on the way back and causing you a panic.

The airport security process can be very scary, especially for small children.  To make the process go as smoothly and safely as possible, practice at home.  Let the kids know what to expect and go through the steps at home.  That way you have the procedure down so that if mom or dad gets stuck in the process you don’t wind up with the kids wandering off all over the airport.  Keeping track of children in the hustle and bustle of an airport is hard enough; make it easier on yourself by practicing how you want them to behave and what you want them to do.

Most importantly, tell the children not to talk to anyone they don’t know unless they are a security guard at the airport.  Point out the security guards and tell the kids they are a safe person if a problem occurs.  Airports are crowded and busy; kids need to be practicing safety first.  Keep them as close to you as possible and keep an eye out for anyone acting suspiciously.  Try not to be overly paranoid since that can ruin a trip too and not everyone is a threat, but being aware of your surroundings will greatly reduce the risk that something bad might happen.
