Safe Travel Tips For Women
Never before have women traveled alone for business and pleasure than in the last several decades. While the destinations and reasons for travel are the same as their male counterparts, women generally have different concerns. Not only are there safety issues, there may be cultural differences that make traveling along difficult. With a little extra care and caution and a few of these travel tips for women, you can travel safer.
First and foremost, learn as much as you possibly can about your destination. This is especially important when traveling to a foreign country. The dominant religious or cultural differences can directly impact how you need to compose yourself. It is better to be aware before you leave that you might need to adjust the way you dress or demeanor in order to apply with the locals’ idea of proper behavior. It is also worth mentioning that things that may be considered sexual harassment in your country may just be part of social life in another. To be safe avoid wearing anything too form-fitting or revealing to prevent any unwanted attention.
As soon as you get to your hotel, introduce yourself to the staff. Get to know the people who monitor who arrives and departs the building and who should be there and who should not. Ask when you check in if a member of staff will be available to you if you arrive late at night to escort you to your room. Specifically ask for a room that is on a higher floor and near the elevator, but as far from emergency exits and stairwells as possible. Don’t accept a room if the clerk announces your name and room number at the desk, ask for another one. While you’re at the front desk, take a card with the name, address and phone number of the hotel. Keep this card with you all the time. Check the room to make sure it has a peephole and a deadbolt, if not don’t open the door for anyone you don’t recognize.
When packing for your trip, pack light. This way you won’t look weighed down or be slowed down, which will make you a target of pickpockets and thieves. Lock all your suitcases and bags with a small padlock and put your office address on all the tags instead of your home address. It is also wise to have a map of the area and familiarize yourself with it before leaving. Ask the hotel concierge where the good and bad parts of town are. All of this will help you avoid looking like a tourist, which ultimately makes your trip safer. Knowledge is your best ally whenever you are traveling alone.
Airport Safety With Children
One of the most challenging parts of any trip with small children is the airport. Between the armed guards and security checkpoints, children can become frightened very easily. There are many ways for you to ease your children’s anxiety and make the airport a fun part of the journey. Ultimately the more excited they are to get to the airport, the safer the trip will be.
First, arrive at the airport as soon as you possibly can. If you rush to the airport important things are often left behind. It used to be that you could leave a driver’s license at home and still get through airport security. But these days it could mean that you don’t even get into airport, let alone on the plane. Nothing would be worse than leaving one person’s documents at home and end up missing your plane. Additionally if only one parent is taking the children out of the country, it might be a good idea to have a letter of permission from the other parent. Just something that says you are allowed to take the children out of the country. Most likely you won’t need it, but it could prove invaluable if you do.
With kids one thing that you can be sure of is last-minute trips to the bathroom. Know exactly where the closest restrooms to your gate are. Call the airport ahead of time to make sure there will be restrooms conveniently located to your departure gate. This will allow you to keep a closer eye on all the children in their trips to the bathroom. The very last thing you want is one child going to the bathroom and becoming lost on the way back and causing you a panic.
The airport security process can be very scary, especially for small children. To make the process go as smoothly and safely as possible, practice at home. Let the kids know what to expect and go through the steps at home. That way you have the procedure down so that if mom or dad gets stuck in the process you don’t wind up with the kids wandering off all over the airport. Keeping track of children in the hustle and bustle of an airport is hard enough; make it easier on yourself by practicing how you want them to behave and what you want them to do.
Most importantly, tell the children not to talk to anyone they don’t know unless they are a security guard at the airport. Point out the security guards and tell the kids they are a safe person if a problem occurs. Airports are crowded and busy; kids need to be practicing safety first. Keep them as close to you as possible and keep an eye out for anyone acting suspiciously. Try not to be overly paranoid since that can ruin a trip too and not everyone is a threat, but being aware of your surroundings will greatly reduce the risk that something bad might happen.
Travel Tips For Staying in a Bed and Breakfast
Staying in a bed and breakfast can be a great romantic getaway, but as with anything else there are certain things you can do to make it easier on yourself. Or you can make it more difficult.
If reserving your room on the telephone try your best to call about ten in the morning. This is the local time, not your time. By that time breakfast has been served and the guests have gone on their way. The owner will have more time to accommodate you and answer any questions you have and address any concerns. Since you will want to have your questions answered, call when you won’t feel rushed. This is also a good time to ask about local activities and attractions. You can book very expensive excursions and things like that, but the owner will know all the inexpensive and fun ways to spend your time.
Most bed and breakfasts have a fridge and complimentary snacks and refreshments in the common areas, but it may not be permitted to take these things to the rooms. Always ask if eating is allowed in the rooms. It most likely isn’t so it’s always better to ask and be sure. Also, while on the subject of food, try not to miss breakfast. This is a great time to experience your host’s culinary ability. You can also meet the other guests and talk and chat for a while. You may just find that you discover great new attractions that you wouldn’t have heard about otherwise.
Remember that bed and breakfasts are not hotels. This is apparent in several very distinct ways. At a bed and breakfast there is not a front desk. There is no concierge. And as such there may not be someone available to you 24 hours a day. Be aware of when the host is available to help you and what hours they want to themselves. Even if they live on the same premises, this is not a free pass to bother them whenever you need something. Ask about policies regarding small children. At a hotel, you could take the whole family with no questions asked. But bed and breakfasts are people’s homes, and most of them have an age limit. Most commonly children under 7 are not permitted, so be sure you are aware of the policy before you book. Also, many bed and breakfasts are not handicapped accessible the way a hotel would be. If you require easier access, specifically request a main level room.
Going On A Cruise With Ease
Going on a cruise can be an amazing and unique trip experience. But there are always a few things that first time cruisers may not be aware of that can dampen the moment. From picking the right time to cruise to Alaska to what you should pack that you might not think of, these are the things experienced cruisers know and information they are happy to share. You want to enjoy your cruise safely as well.
If you want to go on a cruise to Alaska, there will be something new to see all year round. However, between April and May the whales are migrating and the other wildlife is in full spring mode too. This is probably the time two months of the year to see something truly amazing and unforgettable.
Another great tip can help with booking your room. Obviously you won’t be spending a whole lot of time in your cabin, but you want the time you do to be peaceful and not to be disturbed. Try to get a room that is not by the laundry or any other place where a large number of people are likely to congregate. Let’s take the example of the laundry; people will be lined up all over the laundry area after the ship’s entertainment is over. Do you really want to be trying to sleep with thirty people outside your cabin door, speaking loudly and getting impatient? Probably not.
While you are packing for your cruise, pack an extra power strip. If you don’t have one, go to the store and buy one for a couple of bucks. Unless you’re in one of the large and expensive suites, more than likely your cabin will be small, cramped and have a single power outlet. You don’t want to be juggling the single outlet with your cell phone charger, laptop charger, hair dryer, electric razor, curling iron, or anything else that requires power. It might also be a good idea to bring some extra clothes hangers. There will not be much storage space on the ship, so keeping things hanging in the closet will save a lot of space.
Finally, treat your cabin steward well. He or he is your very best friend for making the cruise a pleasant experience. Not only will they be the one cleaning up your cabin twice a day, any special requests you have also go through them. It might be wise to get to know them a little and tip them an extra ten or twenty bucks on the first day. That way when you need an extra pillow at two in the morning, they will jump to make you comfortable. A happy steward has even been known to give his favorite guests before they leave.
Travel Outside the United States
Travel outside the United States or abroad can always include some element of risk. Most travel does, but there are a few precautions and steps you can take to put your mind at ease.
First, you should register your trip with the State Department. It is very easy and free. Simply fill out a form online and your done. This will allow the state department to get in touch with you if there’s an emergency back home or if a major crisis happens in the area you are traveling. And don’t worry about your information being spread around; nothing will be given out without your written permission. In addition to this, be sure to sign your passport and fill out all the emergency information. Just an added tip, fill out the emergency information in pencil. This way if it changes, you only have to erase instead of getting the whiteout or a new passport.
Leave behind a copy of you itinerary and a copy of your passport information page. This will also allow your family and friends to contact you in case of an emergency. Another great idea is to look up the number of the local US Embassy. Just in case you run into any trouble, this could be invaluable. While you are checking things, check with your medical insurance and inquire about overseas coverage. Ask about expensive emergency expenses like medical evacuation. If you are not covered, supplemental or travel insurance might be a good option.
Always remember that while you are in a foreign country, you are subject to their laws and regulations. Research the areas you are visiting and familiarize yourself with local laws. The last place you want to spend your vacation is in a foreign jail, so be sure you know that you won’t inadvertently be breaking any laws. It is also important to take precautions to avoid becoming a victim of a crime. Unfortunately, a lot of crooks see tourists as an easy target so make yourself a difficult one and you should be fine. Do not wear overly conspicuous clothing or jewelry. While you don’t have to dress like mousy school marm, you don’t want to attract undue attention to yourself. For example, walking around town in a silver sequin shirt will attract the attention of everyone for miles, including the criminals. Don’t carry large amounts of cash or all your valuables with you; leave these in the hotel safe. Never leave your luggage or any personal items unattended in a public area. And never ever accept any package from a stranger; far too many tourists have ended up in jail for this particular mistake.
Following these simple precautions and using your common sense will ensure that your overseas travel is as safe as can be. All you need to do now is see the sites, relax, and have a good time.
